Glossary · Standard vs SOP

What is the difference between a standard and an SOP in a hotel?

A standard is the required outcome: what must be true in a room, a public space or a service moment, issued by a brand, owner or operator and the same at every property it covers. An SOP is the procedure a property follows to deliver that outcome. The standard does not change by property. The SOP does.

In practice.

  • Who issues which. Standards come from the brand, the owner or the management company. SOPs come from the operator as a baseline, and each property localizes them to its building, staffing and market.
  • In practice. One standard across a collection of hotels: fresh flowers in every lobby. A downtown hotel meets it with scheduled deliveries; a remote resort keeps a florist on site. Two SOPs, one standard.
  • The verbs tell them apart. Standards are set, met, held, verified or missed. SOPs are written, issued, localized, followed, trained or updated.
  • What it is not. A checklist is neither: it verifies that the SOP was followed and the standard was met. A requirement is one testable line inside a standard.

Questions

No. The property meets the standard; it does not edit it. What the property changes is its SOP, the way its team delivers the outcome.
